Why is maintaining confidentiality important in relation to :

-respect and support for the child/ren

When a child discloses to you, it may be a difficult process for them. they are scared and need comfort and support from you. you must keep this confidential because if shared inappropriately, there can be severe consequences such as the abuser causing more harm to the child when they find out the child has confided in another person.

-service information on families and children

Your service should already have a policy to keep all records of families and children confidential. This is to gain trust and foster a good relationship with the families. Information should not be shared to anyone that the families have not listed. If information is leaked to an individual, this individual could be the abuser and gain information such as the home address or what the child likes to play with which ables them to lure the child easily.

-your legal obligation to report

I'm a bit unsure about this one? can someone help?

“under sections 11(1) and (2) of the children’s protection act 1993, certain people are obliged by law to notify Families SA via the Child Abuse Report Line if they suspect on reasonable grounds that a child/young person has been or is being, abused and/or neglected and the suspicion is formed in the course of the person’s work(whether paid or voluntary) or in carrying out official duties”
It is mandatory to report child abuse and failure to is a criminal offence with a maximum penalty of $10,000. Provided that a report is made in good faith, mandated notifiers are immune from civil liability and your identity will be kept confidential unless the disclosure is made in the course of official duties.
