Hi,

I work in NSW in a preschool with children aged between 3-5.

From my understanding ratios for this age group are 1:10

My employer keeps staying that yes the ratios are 1:10 but its based on the roof space i.e how many qualified educators are in the building at anyone time?!?!?!

To me this is not right, has anyone ever heard of this.

I have contacted the Departement and this (roof space) was certainly not mentioned.

Thanks

Unfortunately this is a bit of a loop hole known as "Under one roof". From what I've read it is technically allowed - but anyone who's worked in childcare will know that it's ridiculous. Rooms rarely run smoothly when they're over ratio regardless of whether the other staff members are on the premises somewhere!

I contacted the Department about this issue because many educators within the forum expressed their concerns and issues regarding "under the roof" guideline that many employers have been enforcing. This is the email I received:

Ratio For Under The Roof - Email Received From The Department

Hope this helps,
