Hi all, I was just wondering if I am being payed correctly? I've looked up all of the tables and fair work charts but I'm still a bit confused.

I'm 19 years old and am completing my traineeship for cert III. I completed year 12 and have been out of high school for 2 years. I work full time.

According to fair work, a junior of 19 years old at level 1.1 on commencement should be earning $20.10 per hour when working full time. I'm earning $15.10.

Am I making a mistake, or is my director? I'm very confused but I don't want to go to her if I'm the one in the wrong.

Hi Annie,

On 01 July, Fair Work Commission had announced in an increase in wages, including the trainee wage.

From the information you have provided, you should be on $20.10/per hour.

For your reference:

Please speak to the Director about this...

let me know what happens if they don't increase your wages, so I can help you with what to do next...

Hi Lorina,

I spoke to the Fair Work Commission and they told me I am being paid under a Miscellaneous Trainee award instead of the Children's Services award, is that correct? I thought we were all under the Children's Services award, even trainees. Aren't trainees level 1.1?

Either way I've been getting different answers from everyone and want to be sure before I approach my director.

I'm going to try and find out more information for you. Yes, you're supposed to be paid under the Trainee wage, in the Children's Services Award 2010.

No need to rush into talking to your Director... I'll contact Fair Work as well to help you get this sorted...

There has been a bit of confusion regarding the trainee wages... before 01 July the trainee wage was determined by your age, the year you finished high school and how many years out of high school you are, now the trainee wages only are determined by age...

Last week I had emailed Fair Work Australia regarding this and I’m still waiting for a response to understand what wages trainees are supposed to use. I’ll let you know once I find out more information... I’m still waiting for a reply from them...

Sorry I don’t have an answer at the moment but I want to be sure before I advise you...

I'm very interested in knowing the response from Fair Work Australia about the Trainee wage. As my daughter has just started a traineeship (on Thursday 06 Sep) to do her Certificate 3. She is 18 and was until then in Year 12 at High School. She was also told by the Director that the wage was determined by her age and year she has completed at school. As she hadn't quite finished Year 12, she is based on as completing Year 11 only. The Director has told her that her wage will be $9.80? an hour. This Traineeship is for 12mths full time. She is working 5 days a week. Her hours are 8.15am to 4.45pm each day. We are in NSW. As her mum I'm very interested to know if this is correct. Even more so as I am also an Early Childhood Educator. With an Associate Diploma of Social Science Child Studies Qualification (gained from TAFE NSW back in 1995).

Ok!! I know you've all been awaiting Fair Work response regarding this issue. Here it is:

"An employee completing a traineeship in a childcare centre is covered under MA000120: Children’s Services Award 2010. All the employee's conditions of employment will come from this award, however, their pay rate is from MA000104: Miscellaneous Award 2010"

Pay Rates as per the Miscellaneous Award, 2010 are as follows (based on per week):

School Leaver

Year 10 - $323.10
Year 11 - $355.80
Year 12 - $423.90

Plus 1 year out of school

Year 10 - $355.8-
Year 11 - $423.90
Year 12 - $493.30

Plus 2 years out of school

Year 10 - $423.90
Year 11 - $493.30
Year 12 - $574.10

Plus 3 years out of school

Year 10 - $493.30
Year 11 - $574.10
Year 12 - $657.30

Plus 4 years out of school

Year 10 - $574.10
Year 11 - $657.30

Plus 5 or more years out of school

Year 10 - $657.10

In the Children's Services Award they have Apprenticeships available which I assumed was the same as a traineeship.

Apparently not the only difference is an apprenticeship is more than 2 years...

An apprenticeship involves full-time or part-time work with an employer who provides an opportunity to learn all aspects of a trade. This is a structured program with a combination of on the job and off the job training at a TAFE college or another registered training organisation (one that has been approved by the Government).

Some of the benefits of an apprenticeship are that you can:
• earn a wage while you train
• learn on the job skills combined with off the job training
• receive a nationally recognised qualification
• start a valuable step towards a rewarding career.

In a traineeship, you also gain hands-on skills and work experience, and improve your employment prospects, while earning a wage. You also get a nationally recognised qualification which can lead to rewarding career options.

The difference between a traineeship and an apprenticeship is that a traineeship can be either a full-time or part-time employment based training arrangement, usually for around 12 months (apprenticeships usually last for three to four years) and is generally in a non-trade related area.

Thanks Lorina for the detail. I am just confused what is meant by School Leaver/ Plus 1 year out of school? I am asking on behalf of my wife. She is starting her traineship in childcare soon. She did her Bachelors degree (16 years Education) from home country and planning to start Cert III in Early child care with the traineship. She dont have any previous eductaion or experience in that. In which category she will be?
